Blogging vs Pen-and-Paper on the Essay Writing Performance

In 2013, Hajar Kashani, Rosnaini Binti Mahmud and Seyed Ali Rezvani Kalajahi from Putra Malaysia University wrote an article titled Comparing the Effect of Blogging as well as Pen-and-Paper on the Essay Writing Performance of Iranian Graduate Students. It published by Canadian Center of Science and Education.

This article comparing the effect of two different tools namely blog and pen-and-paper that is used in writing an essay. The study conducted among Iranian graduate students of Putra Malaysia University (UPM). They still have many difficulties in academic writing even they were taught English language skills for seven years at school.

Simsek (2009) states that weblogs seem to be tools that are highly valuable for the current writing instruction; particularly due to their direct relation to writing something.

The Iranian graduate students of UPM said that blog more interesting and motivating tool for writing, but it was not as easy using as pen-and-paper for them. Using the tools together with the internet can motivate the EFL learners to write more eagerly since they like innovation in learning writing.

This study provides the EFL teachers better knowledge and understanding about the graduate students' needs for writing in English language. They can use a blog as a tool for teaching writing in their classes and view the students’ motivation and eagerness in writing. The teachers can put writing topics in the books which are more interesting for the students to write about. This will be a new method to learn English language in a modern and fresh atmosphere.
